my art
my deviant art profile is where i'll be trying to put up my most recent bits and pieces.
i've just finished a degree in fine art [at UWIC, cardiff] speciallising in the photovisual area. i'll use this page to attempt to document my work. not much here at the moment as i've deleted my older pieces and need to scan examples of my newer work.
1st year - short movement project
we were given a short project, where we were asked to put together a sequence of images. i decided to use the time to experiment with slow shutter speeds to capture movement. i liked the almost painterly quality that was captured.
what is site specific art? basically put, it's art removed from a gallery setting ... dealing with a specific area and usually displaying the work in that area, wherever it may be.we were given the task of coming up with a short project based around our uni, so i decided to look at my own personal connection with the space. i was interested in the marks we all leave behind in the places we visit -our shadows and history there ... so i took photos of my reflections in the windows that i pass by in college, blew them up to life size then re-presented them in the windows. at first glance you probably wouldn't notice my pieces, but on closer inspection it becomes apparant that my own reflection has replaced the viewer's. these are the finished pieces.

i've been looking at different aspects of beauty, and have been particularly interested in the idea that beauty within both nature and human features can be measured. scientists have come up with the ratio 1:1.618. a mask has been made up using this ratio, and when it is applied to the faces of those generally thought of as 'beautiful', their features are shown to match up closely. the notion that we should all be trying to live up to this one specific beauty ideal is quite disturbing to me, and i imagine a blande and extremely boring world where we all strive to match this same vision: this year's work has been based around this idea.
